Genetic Genealogy – an Introduction

December 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Genetic genealogy is the application of genetics to traditional genealogy. Genetic genealogy involves the use of genealogical DNA testing to determine the level of genetic relationship between individuals. There are presently two types of DNA testing that are the most useful in genealogy; Y-DNA (paternal line) and mtDNA (maternal line). Y-DNA is only present in the male. It is passed from father to son, virtually unchanged, down through the generations. The maternal line can be traced through mtDNA which is passed on from the mother to both male and female offspring, but will only continue on through... [Read the full story]

The African-American Migration Experience

The trans-Atlantic slave trade that brought millions of Africans to the Americas was touched on in European Colonialism II: The New World. I mentioned there a hugely useful website for those researching African-American ancestors. The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database holds information on almost 35,000 slaving voyages that carried over 10 million Africans to the Americas between the 16th and 19th centuries. It identifies over 67,000 Africans aboard slave ships. Now comes a new online exhibition that doesn’t stop there. In Motion: The African-American Migration Experience documents 400... [Read the full story]

Strandvonder Vinder’s avatar is the “Strandvonder”, a sculpture that stands at the beach of Camperduin in the province of Holland in the Netherlands overlooking the beach and the sea. He leans forward against the fierce wind, carrying his meagre findings under one arm as he peers in the far distance, to find anything useful in this seemingly unfriendly and unrewarding environment. This used to be the life of the Dutch Jutter or Strandvonder (strand is the Dutch word for beach). Archaic names for an archaic profession. These people served their country by scanning the beaches... [Read the full story]

European Colonialism II: The New World

The story of the New World begins in the Old World. For the Americas were not new to their original inhabitants. Native Americans had been living there for thousands of years before any European set foot on American soil. It was a “new world” to Europeans drawn to these vast, uncharted continents, which seemed to offer boundless opportunity. The... Read more of this article

European Colonialism I: Before Columbus

The most massive movement of people on earth has taken place in the last few centuries. Branches of the tree of mankind who had lived apart for tens of thousands of years are now intertwined in the great cities of the world. How did this come about? The story starts with the growing confidence of European navigators. The peoples of the Near East mastered... Read more of this article
